A Study of What Moves Within Us
Everything that exists is in motion.
Not necessarily in the way we usually imagine motion. A body can remain still while billions of microscopic processes continue around and within it. The heart contracts and releases. Neurons fire in patterns. Breathing rises and falls. Hormones fluctuate. Cells respond to mechanical forces. The brain moves through changing electrical states. Sleep arrives, disappears, and returns.
Even what feels permanent is usually a process.
We simply call some processes life.
The word frequency describes how often something repeats over time. In physics, it can describe oscillations in sound, electromagnetic fields, mechanical systems and countless other phenomena. In biology, rhythmic processes appear everywhere, from the molecular clocks governing approximately 24-hour cycles to the changing intervals between heartbeats.
But THE FREQUENCIES is not an attempt to assign a mystical number to every human emotion.
It is something more personal.
A language for the invisible transitions that happen inside us.
Because human experience rarely changes in clean categories.
We don't simply move from sadness to happiness.
We move through hesitation, longing, attachment, isolation, awareness, resistance, surrender, curiosity, creation and eventually something that may not have a name.
A thought refuses to leave.
A memory changes shape.
A person remains present long after they have disappeared.
A silence becomes louder than conversation.
Something shifts.
And for a moment, you are not quite the person you were before it happened.
That shift is what we mean by frequency here. Not literally. But meaningfully.
FREQUENCY AS MOVEMENT
Science gives us a useful starting point.
A frequency is fundamentally a measurement of repetition. A vibration repeats. A wave oscillates. A biological rhythm cycles.
The human body is filled with such rhythms.
The heart does not beat like a metronome. The intervals between beats constantly fluctuate, and that variation itself contains information about autonomic regulation. Heart-rate variability, for example, is used to study the interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
The brain is rhythmic too.
Neural activity contains oscillations across multiple timescales. These patterns are not simply a collection of isolated "brainwave frequencies"; they interact with one another and with incoming sensory information. Research into neural oscillations has shown that ongoing brain activity can influence whether an incoming stimulus is consciously perceived.
Even our sense of time is biological.
Circadian clocks operate throughout the body, coordinating sleep, metabolism, endocrine activity, cardiovascular function, immune activity and other physiological processes around roughly 24-hour cycles.
We are therefore not static organisms.
We are rhythmic ones.
Perhaps that is why the metaphor of frequency feels strangely appropriate.
SOUND IS MOVEMENT WE CAN HEAR
Sound makes the idea easier to understand.
A sound wave is physical movement through a medium. The auditory system translates those fluctuations into neural signals. The cochlea and auditory pathways are organized tonotopically, meaning different frequencies are represented systematically throughout the auditory system.
But somewhere between vibration and perception, something remarkable happens.
A frequency becomes experience.
A sequence of sounds becomes music.
Music can change attention, evoke memories, alter mood and influence physiological responses. Neuroscience research has linked music-evoked emotion with activity across networks involving the amygdala, hippocampus, insula, nucleus accumbens and other regions involved in emotion, memory and reward.
Rhythm can also interact with our own timing systems.
This phenomenon, broadly described as entrainment, refers to the tendency of biological or neural processes to become coordinated with external rhythmic structures. Research into rhythmic entrainment suggests that this interaction may contribute to the emotional power of music.
And the effect isn't purely psychological.
Recent research continues to investigate measurable physiological responses to music, including changes in heart-rate variability. A 2026 meta-analysis of 24 randomized controlled trials involving 1,295 participants found significant changes in several HRV measures following music interventions, although the effects varied by context and population.
So when someone says:
"That song changed something in me."
They aren't necessarily speaking metaphorically.
Something did happen.
The question is what.
THE BODY LISTENS TOO
We tend to think of vibration as something that happens outside us.
But living tissue is mechanically responsive.
Cells sense mechanical forces through processes collectively described as mechanotransduction. Mechanical changes can influence cellular signalling and behaviour. Contemporary research is even exploring controlled vibration as a tool for influencing cell behaviour and tissue regeneration.
The human body itself also has measurable resonant behaviour.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined experimentally measured resonant frequencies across organs, tissues and body parts, showing that different parts of the human body respond differently to mechanical vibration.
This does not mean that a particular frequency will magically "heal your cells."
It means something more interesting:
The body is not indifferent to its physical environment.
It responds.
It adapts.
It resonates.
Sometimes literally.
AND THEN THERE IS THE MIND
The mind is where frequency stops being something we can easily measure and becomes something we experience.
Consider desire.
A thought appears.
Then it returns.
Then again.
It occupies more mental space.
Eventually the thought becomes an intention, the intention becomes behaviour, and the behaviour begins changing the person who originally had the thought.
The repetition has become transformation.
This is why THE FREQUENCIES isn't about assigning numbers to emotions.
It is about recognizing patterns of movement.
The frequency of a person can change.
Not because their body suddenly becomes a radio transmitter broadcasting a new mystical wavelength, but because their attention, behaviour, physiology, relationships and internal narrative have changed.
001 — PRESENCE
Before understanding comes observation.
Before interpretation comes existence.
Presence is the simplest frequency:
I am here.
The nervous system is constantly receiving information from the external world and from the body itself. Conscious perception emerges from complex interactions between ongoing neural activity and incoming sensory information.
Presence is therefore not merely sitting quietly.
It is noticing.
The room.
The breath.
The thought.
The discomfort.
The fact that you are alive while reading these words.
Before the mind asks why, there is simply here.
002 — AWARENESS
Awareness begins when observation becomes recognition.
You don't merely experience something.
You notice that you are experiencing it.
And sometimes that is where things become uncomfortable.
Awareness can reveal patterns we would rather leave undisturbed: habits, contradictions, desires, fears and memories.
The brain itself does not process every incoming signal identically. Perception depends partly on ongoing neural states and the way sensory information interacts with larger networks.
What we notice changes what becomes real to us.
Awareness is therefore not simply seeing more.
It is realizing that you were never seeing everything.
003 — DESIRE
Desire is movement toward something.
A person.
An experience.
Recognition.
Freedom.
Meaning.
Possibility.
Desire creates tension between what exists and what might exist.
That tension can destroy us.
It can also move us.
The same mind capable of endlessly rehearsing an absence can transform that absence into creation.
Desire is therefore neither good nor bad.
It is energy with direction.
What matters is where it takes you.
004 — ATTACHMENT
We hold things because they once held meaning.
A person.
A place.
A version of ourselves.
A photograph.
A promise.
Sometimes the thing we are attached to has already disappeared, but our nervous system continues behaving as if it hasn't.
Attachment is where memory and identity begin overlapping.
And memory is not a perfect recording of the past. It is reconstructive, continually influenced by the present.
Perhaps this is why some things remain long after they are gone.
We don't necessarily hold onto the thing.
We hold onto the version of ourselves that existed when the thing was still ours.
005 — SOLITUDE
Solitude removes noise.
Not necessarily external noise.
Internal noise.
When there is nobody to impress, nobody to perform for and nowhere to redirect attention, the self becomes considerably harder to avoid.
Solitude can feel empty.
It can also become revealing.
The difference between loneliness and solitude is not simply the absence of people.
It is what happens inside that absence.
One feels abandoned.
The other becomes an encounter.
006 — TRANSFORMATION
Transformation is rarely elegant.
We like stories in which people become better versions of themselves through one decisive realization.
Human beings are unfortunately less cooperative than that.
Change is usually repetitive.
A belief breaks.
A habit returns.
You fail.
You notice.
You try again.
Something slowly reorganizes.
Even at the biological level, living systems are continuously adapting to their environments. Mechanical forces can alter cellular signalling and phenotype, while circadian systems continually adjust physiological processes to environmental timing cues.
Transformation is not becoming someone else.
It is becoming less identical to who you were.
007 — SEEKING
Seeking is the frequency of the unfinished question.
Why?
What if?
What next?
What is beyond this?
It is the state that refuses to accept the first available answer.
Science itself is built upon this refusal.
Every established explanation becomes a temporary stopping point until someone discovers an anomaly large enough to disturb it.
Seeking is therefore not necessarily about finding.
Sometimes the search itself changes the person doing the searching.
The destination becomes secondary.
The movement becomes the point.
008 — ACCEPTANCE
Acceptance is frequently misunderstood as surrender.
It isn't.
Acceptance is perception without negotiation.
Reality does not become acceptable because we accept it.
It simply becomes reality.
You cannot negotiate with the past.
You cannot argue someone into loving you.
You cannot make time reverse itself.
You cannot prevent every loss.
Acceptance is the moment the struggle against an immutable fact becomes more painful than the fact itself.
That does not mean you stop acting.
It means you stop demanding that reality first become something else before you are willing to live inside it.
009 — EXPRESSION
Expression is where the invisible becomes visible.
A thought becomes writing.
An emotion becomes music.
An obsession becomes an image.
A memory becomes a photograph.
A question becomes a garment.
Expression is not merely communication.
It is externalization.
We take something that exists privately and give it a form that can survive outside ourselves.
This is why 009 — EXPRESSION is not simply about art.
It is about refusing to let everything that moves within you disappear without a trace.
Sometimes expression is the only evidence that something was ever felt.
000 — TRANSCENDENCE
And eventually there is the strange possibility of moving beyond the need to name everything.
Beyond presence.
Beyond awareness.
Beyond desire.
Beyond attachment.
Beyond the endless search for explanation.
Transcendence does not necessarily mean escaping reality.
It can mean becoming less obsessed with standing outside reality and explaining it.
The observer becomes part of what is being observed.
The boundary becomes less certain.
The question changes from:
"What does this mean?"
to:
"Can I simply experience it?"
Perhaps transcendence is not the final answer.
Perhaps it is the point where we finally stop demanding one.
NOTHING IS INFERIOR OR SUPERIOR
These frequencies are not a hierarchy.
Presence is not superior to desire.
Solitude is not superior to attachment.
Acceptance is not superior to transformation.
There is no spiritually enlightened frequency sitting at the top while the others wait below it like students who forgot their homework.
Human beings move between them.
Sometimes within the same hour.
We can be aware and attached.
Seeking and afraid.
Transforming and grieving.
Present and completely lost.
That contradiction is not a failure of the system.
It is the system.
Human experience is dynamic.
THE LIMIT OF THE METAPHOR
There is a temptation whenever the word frequency appears to turn it into something mystical.
Certain claims circulate online that particular frequencies possess universal healing powers, that emotions correspond to precise numerical vibrations, or that listening to a specific tone can automatically repair the body.
The evidence does not justify those claims.
Sound and vibration can produce measurable biological effects. Music can influence physiological and psychological states. Mechanical vibration interacts with living tissue. Neural activity is oscillatory. Environmental electromagnetic fields are an active area of research.
But none of that proves that a particular mystical frequency universally corresponds to love, consciousness, healing or enlightenment.
Even research into popular ideas such as binaural beats remains mixed. Meta-analyses suggest potential effects on anxiety, pain and cognition, but the evidence varies considerably by outcome and protocol. A 2026 systematic review of theta binaural-beat interventions, for example, found low-certainty evidence for reduced pain and noted substantial heterogeneity in other outcomes.
The distinction matters.
Because mystery becomes more interesting when we don't have to lie about it.
There is already enough we don't understand.
We don't need to manufacture certainty.
WHAT MOVES WITHIN US
Maybe that is what the Frequencies are ultimately asking.
Not:
"What frequency are you?"
But:
"What is moving within you?"
What keeps returning?
What are you becoming?
What are you still holding?
What are you trying to escape?
What are you finally willing to see?
What are you unable to say?
What wants to become something?
And what happens when you stop trying to force an answer?
There are things within us that science can measure.
There are things philosophy can examine.
There are things art can express.
And there are things that remain stubbornly beyond language.
The Frequencies exist somewhere between all four.
Not as a scientific classification of human beings.
Not as a spiritual hierarchy.
Not as an instruction manual for feeling.
But as a recognition:
Something is always moving within us.
Sometimes we call it thought.
Sometimes memory.
Sometimes desire.
Sometimes grief.
Sometimes consciousness.
Sometimes nothing at all.
And perhaps life is simply the strange process of moving through these frequencies without ever remaining in one for very long.
Ten Frequencies.
Ten states of being.
Ten fragments of human experience.
Nothing is inferior.
Nothing is superior.
Everything moves.
And somewhere within that movement,
something within you is waiting to be noticed.
